Greens back Peacock proposals for Union Terrace Gardens

As the consultation about the controversial City Square proposals come to an end, (1) the Scottish Green Party has called for a realistic and progressive approach to enhancing the gardens, and has urged Aberdeen City Council to listen to concerns about the exclusion of the Peacock Visual Arts proposal from their consultation.

Robin Harper MSP said:

"There has been much comment on the parallel of Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens with Union Terrace Gardens. Princes Street Gardens have the advantage that they provide some through routes as well as being a green refuge in the centre of a busy city. The designs produced by Peacock Arts show how their proposals could be built on to increase connectivity in just this way.

"Aberdeen City Council appear to have made their mind up already by excluding the Peacock proposals from their consultation. I'd urge all those concerned about this decision both to take part in the consultation and sign the petition."

Rhonda Reekie, the Scottish Green Party's prospective Parliamentary candidate for Aberdeen South, said:

"All the indications are that the consultation will be overwhelmingly in favour of retaining the gardens, enhanced by the new Northern Lights Contemporary Arts Centre. Compromise is in the air but that will take time. What is needed is a firm commitment to continue funding for the Peacock proposals and get this element of the work started, which is the best way to provide a firm base for revitalising the gardens."

Notes

1. The consultation ends on 5th March, and Peacock's funding from the Scottish Arts Council runs out at the end of March. There are two online petitions.
