Greens celebrate 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day

Greens are celebrating the many achievements of women in promoting peace and justice across the world to mark International Women's Day on 8th March 2011. There has been progress for women's equality over the last 100 years, but it is recognised there is still much to be done to ensure women are treated equally.

Holyrood candidate Rhonda Reekie said, "I am proud that Molly Forbes joined green activists from the north-east and all over Scotland to celebrate the achievement of women over the part 100 years"

Rhonda Reekie added "However thousands of working women are still discriminated against because they are pregnant and there is a pay gap of 13% between men and women for the same job. We continue to live in a society where women fear for their safety, with convictions for rape are at an all time low at just 5.6%, and one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime".

Rhonda Reekie continued "Without strong women’s networks, support from both women's organisations and our wider society, the advances required could be seriously undermined.  In the year ahead, let us continue to take action to support women's equality and build a fairer, more equal world."
